Max Scherzer threw 114 pitches and struck out seven batters Sunday against the Cincinnati Reds in what may be the final start of his 19-year career, leading the Toronto Blue Jays to a victory in Game 162.
The 42-year-old right-hander and three-time Cy Young Award winner took the mound seeking his 225th career win, pitching in front of his children. During the game, Scherzer refused manager John Schneider’s attempt to pull him from the mound so he could exit on his own terms.
Toronto was already eliminated from postseason contention after dropping a series to the Baltimore Orioles, ending the club’s attempt to defend its American League title. Despite struggles with his slider in 2026, Scherzer found success with his curveball down the stretch and said he felt physically well at the close of his 19th season. ‘I actually feel great. I feel I’ve been throwing the ball better,’ Scherzer said.
Scherzer left the door open to pitch in 2027, but he said he will wait until after the season concludes before deciding whether to return.
