Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas to star in True Detective season 5

The actors will headline the fifth season of the HBO anthology series, which moves the crime drama to Jamaica Bay, New York.

Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will lead the cast of True Detective for its fifth season, which is scheduled to start filming in 2027. The Hollywood Reporter reported that HBO confirmed character names for the two leads, casting Cage as Henry Logan and Banderas as Rai Garcia. The new season shifts the anthology series to Jamaica Bay, New York, according to Deadline.

Setting and creative team

Issa López is returning as showrunner, writer, and director after helming the fourth season, Night Country. López will also serve as an executive producer alongside writer Daniel Zelman, Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Steve Golin, and Richard Brown. Series creator Nic Pizzolatto, season one director Cary Joji Fukunaga, and season one leads Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are credited as executive producers as well, alongside Cage and Banderas.

HBO, which now sits under the Skydance umbrella after the merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, has kept specific plot details private. While the narrative moves from the Arctic to New York, López told the NY Post that there’ll be important connections between Alaska and the new season. “That said, it’s a new story, new characters, everything,” she said. HBO drama head Francesca Orsi told Deadline last year that López has a lot to say in a different setting that’s just as powerful as her previous work.

Anthology history and ratings

HBO ordered the fifth season in February 2024 following the broadcast run of Night Country, which starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in Alaska. That season drew 12.7 million cross-platform viewers, making it the most-watched installment in the anthology’s run, Variety reported.

Across its run, True Detective has collected 41 Emmy nominations and six awards, including honors for actors McConaughey, Harrelson, Mahershala Ali, and Foster. The series began in Louisiana in its debut season before moving to California with Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, and Rachel McAdams for season two. Season three followed Ali and Stephen Dorff through an investigation in the Ozarks before the show shifted north to Alaska for season four.

The lead actors and production timeline

Speculation regarding the new leads circulated for months before the announcement. Cage had been in talks for a role since the summer of 2025, and reports linked Banderas to the project late last year. Cage discussed joining the production during an appearance at New York Comic Con last week, saying he chose television to feed his family and avoid doing too many movies back to back. “So I think I’m probably going to do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective,” he told the audience.

True Detective marks Cage’s second time leading a television series, following his performance in the Prime Video superhero series Spider-Noir. His film work includes Leaving Las Vegas, Pig, Dream Scenario, and National Treasure, and he’ll next appear as football coach John Madden in the upcoming Prime Video film Madden. Cage is represented by WME, Stride Management, and attorney Patrick Knapp.

Banderas recently appeared in Babygirl alongside Nicole Kidman, the Anthony Bourdain biographical project Tony, and Up Against It, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival. He also voiced Puss in Boots across the Shrek franchise and starred in The Mask of Zorro and The Legend of Zorro. NuCo Media Group and Greenberg Glusker represent Banderas as the show heads toward its 2027 production window.
