Trump’s UN Address on Iran

President Donald Trump addressed the UN General Assembly, defending the U.S. war with Iran and describing Iran as a former “bully of the Middle East” that is “the bully no more.” He posed a stark choice to Iran’s leadership: either reach a deal after the midterm elections or face annihilation. Trump said, “Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before, or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic, and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again?” He expressed belief that a deal would be made after the election because “it doesn’t make sense for them not to.”

Iran’s Response and Negotiations

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Iran did not trust another negotiation, despite Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi meeting with U.S. negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Pezeshkian said, “We have been at the negotiating table several times. The whole world sees that they are easily trampled on, the agreements. They cannot use force to compel people to submit.”

U.S. Military Presence in Greenland and NATO Relations

Following President Trump’s threats against a NATO ally, the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland reached an agreement allowing the U.S. to expand its military presence with two new bases in Greenland. The deal includes a permanent ban on Chinese and Russian investment in Greenland without compromising Danish sovereignty. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the deal “a win-win” beneficial for the U.S., Greenland, Denmark, NATO, and Europe. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen emphasized that the agreement respects the rights and development of Greenland’s people.

Regional Conflict and Other UN Issues

Trump met with Middle Eastern allies amid the conflict with Iran, including concerns over Iranian-backed Houthis’ advances in Yemen along the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The Houthis have damaged a critical Saudi pipeline, which Saudi Arabia is close to restarting. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in his final General Assembly speech, highlighted global fractures and called for cooperation on challenges like climate change and artificial intelligence. Trump rejected calls to rein in AI, contrasting them with previous warnings on global warming, stating, “We’re going to encourage it, not rein it in.”
