Vikings sign OBJ to practice squad after release by Giants

Odell Beckham Jr. joined Minnesota’s practice squad on Wednesday, reuniting with head coach Kevin O’Connell.

The Minnesota Vikings signed wide receiver OBJ to their practice squad on Wednesday, adding the veteran pass catcher one week after his release by the New York Giants.

Beckham, 33, did not record a catch across three appearances in his second stint with the Giants this season. A former three-time Pro Bowl receiver who also previously played for the Cleveland Browns, he attended practice with Minnesota on Wednesday and spoke with reporters at an afternoon press conference.

The Odell Beckham Jr. Vikings signing pairs the wide receiver with head coach Kevin O’Connell. The pair previously won a Super Bowl together in 2022 with the Los Angeles Rams, where O’Connell was the offensive coordinator. O’Connell said he was excited about the reunion and noted he hasn’t ruled out elevating Beckham to the active roster for Sunday’s game. “The guy loves football,” O’Connell said.

Minnesota enters Week 5 leading the NFC North with an undefeated 4-0 record ahead of a road matchup against the New Orleans Saints. According to USA TODAY Sports, the Vikings rank last in the NFL in passing. The receiver depth chart currently features Jordan Addison and Jauan Jennings, while star wideout Justin Jefferson has dealt with a sprained left ankle.

Outlets reported differing reasons for the addition of Odell Beckham Jr. Gridiron Heroics and Athlon Sports reported that Minnesota brought him in to bolster depth while Jefferson recovers. Heavy reported that the signing had “nothing to do” with Jefferson’s health, reporting instead that Jefferson is on track to return soon. Beckham, who was assigned the jersey number previously worn by J.J. McCarthy, also shares an LSU background with Jefferson, who described Beckham as a “brother.”
