Jeffrey Overton Jr. ran for 209 yards and a late touchdown to lead the Hokies to a comeback win in Chestnut Hill.
Virginia Tech rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Boston College 21-14 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, battling through a coastal noreaster that brought heavy rain and strong winds.
The nor’easter storm rolled in Saturday morning ahead of the noon kickoff, bringing constant rain and gusty winds that challenged both teams, particularly in the first half. Virginia Tech head coach James Franklin dubbed the matchup the ‘Tsunami Bowl’ before the game.
Boston College led late into the fourth quarter, but couldn’t hold off Virginia Tech running back Jeffrey Overton Jr., who broke loose for a 76-yard go-ahead touchdown run. Overton led the Hokies on the ground with 209 rushing yards on 25 carries, while quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer completed 22 of 35 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown.
The victory moved Virginia Tech to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Boston College fell to 2-1 after entering the matchup with 11 players ruled out on Thursday’s availability report. Eagles head coach Bill O’Brien said after the game that a fourth-quarter meltdown cost his team an upset win.
