Amazon unveils Echo Show 16 with slimmer design and Alexa+ cards

Amazon introduced the Echo Show 16 smart display with an aluminum frame, updated speakers, and AI-generated cards. The device is available for preorder in the United States starting at $500.

Amazon unveiled the Echo Show 16, a redesigned smart display featuring a thinner aluminum build, upgraded internal speakers, and an interface that organizes interactions using artificial intelligence cards. The company demonstrated the device at a product event in New York City, according to Engadget.

Hardware and screen upgrades

The Echo Show 16 uses a 16-inch full high-definition display that gives users 10 percent more viewing space than the Echo Show 15. Amazon built the unit into an anodized aluminum frame that is roughly 40 percent thinner than its predecessor, TechRadar reported. To accommodate that thinner profile, engineers altered the internal audio components. The device carries eight custom micro-woofers placed along the sides and two tweeters. Built-in microphones, sensors, and custom algorithms continuously adjust audio playback to keep voices and television audio clear in noisy rooms.

Amazon also upgraded the device’s processing components and camera hardware. The Echo Show 16 offers 20 percent more computing power than the previous generation. It includes four microphones, placing two forward-facing units beside the camera and two on the rear panel. A wide-angle 13-megapixel camera provides the widest field of view Amazon has installed on an Echo Show device. The camera supports Amazon’s Visual ID facial recognition system, which can detect recognized household members from up to 17 feet away, compared with eight feet on earlier hardware.

Shoppers can select between a standard glass display and an anti-glare NanoMatte finish. Amazon engineered the NanoMatte etching with Corning to cut down reflections from strong light sources without sacrificing color accuracy or image detail.

Software changes and Alexa+ features

The Echo Show 16 features an overhauled interface built for Alexa+. Rather than presenting text transcripts of spoken queries, the assistant creates visual layouts in real time. When users ask for shopping assistance, Alexa can build comparison tables, list key buying criteria, and supply product links. Vacation planning queries generate dedicated overviews that compile reservations, trip details, and booking links into a single view.

These interactions are grouped into interactive panels called Cards. Opening a Card displays a condensed version of the original query alongside suggestions and expanded information. Users can tap those suggestions to explore further or retrieve earlier discussions. Amazon device team leader Panos Panay described the setup as an integration of user interface design and artificial intelligence. The card layout is also rolling out to the Alexa mobile app.

Users can switch between several Screen Styles. The Family Organizer view displays shared calendars, task lists, meal schedules, and family plans. A Smart Home view turns the display into a dashboard for controlling connected lights, thermostats, and speakers, and it can show the Alexa Home Map. A Photos option converts the screen into a digital picture frame. The device also includes built-in Fire TV software for streaming services like Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, and HBO Max. Amazon packages a physical remote control with the unit, though users can also navigate content and watchlists with voice commands.

Background on previous models

Amazon first introduced its NanoMatte etching technology on the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro before adapting it for the Echo Show 16. The new smart display follows recent hardware updates to the Echo Show 8 and Echo Show 11. The Echo Show 16 represents Amazon’s thinnest wall-mountable smart screen, trimming down the thicker profile used on the Echo Show 15 and Echo Show 21.

Pricing and release dates

Preorders for the Echo Show 16 are open ahead of delivery dates planned for later this year. TechRadar reported that the device will ship in mid-December, while Engadget reported that shipments will begin in time for the holiday season. The device is currently sold only in the United States.

Pricing varies by screen coating, and the outlets reported conflicting prices for the anti-glare edition. The standard display model costs $499.99, while the NanoMatte version is priced at $579.99 according to TechRadar, though Engadget listed the price at $570. Amazon is offering a $100 preorder discount on both models. Using the interactive Alexa+ features requires an active Prime membership or a standalone Alexa+ subscription. Amazon is also offering an optional standard stand for $70 and an adjustable swivel-and-tilt stand for $125.
