Disney and Marvel re-released the 2019 film with extra footage, aiming for a $50 million global weekend gross.
Disney and Marvel Studios brought Avengers: Endgame Encore to approximately 3,000 theaters this weekend, adding new footage to preview the December arrival of ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Thursday preview screenings began at 2 p.m., bringing in more than $3 million.
Box office projections and theater counts
Heading into the weekend, domestic forecasts projected the re-release to make between $25 million and $30 million. With Marvel Avengers: Endgame Encore projected to take in $25 million internationally, the film is on track for roughly $50 million worldwide over the weekend.
The re-release is showing on 1,300 premium large format screens with Disney and Marvel’s new Infinity Vision certification, alongside 390 Imax locations. It shares those formats with Sony’s ‘Resident Evil,’ which is in its second weekend. With A24’s ‘Primetime’ also targeting a $20 million opening, one distribution source told Deadline, ‘It could be a three way fight for No. 1.’
Globally, Avengers Endgame holds second place on the all-time box office list with $2.799 billion, trailing James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ at $2.92 billion by $124 million. Disney has not set a formal close date for the re-release run before ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in theaters on Dec. 18.
Four scenes setting up Doomsday
The Endgame Encore release incorporates four minutes of footage filmed during the production of ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ directed by the Russo Brothers. The added material is split across four distinct scenes.
The first scene appears during Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter’s dance near the end of the movie, where Loki arrives at their door dressed in his Time Variance Authority uniform. A second scene set inside the TVA shows Mobius, Casey, Ouroboros and Miss Minutes watching the multiverse break down as colliding alternate Earths trigger incursions.
During the credits, another scene follows Bruce Banner after the events of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ While Banner works on a suppression serum in an underground bunker, Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom breaks in, prompting Banner to turn into the Hulk. At the very end of the credits, the original sound of Iron Man forging armor accompanies visuals of Doctor Doom crafting his metal mask.
