Microsoft details Windows 11 speed gains for 8 GB PCs

New memory optimizations let Windows 11 retain more active data in RAM and cut background app usage to speed up budget hardware.

Microsoft announced on Tuesday that it’s improving Windows 11 performance on computers equipped with 8 GB of memory, rolling out optimizations designed to make lower-cost hardware run faster The Register reported. The software maker said it’s raising the standard for 8 GB systems following a memory optimization push that started earlier this year.

Microsoft speeds up Windows 11 with memory fixes previously documented responsiveness gains of up to 20 percent on PCs with constrained memory. The company has now shared a detailed breakdown of how those changes work and where users should see differences according to Engadget.

Changes to active memory and apps

Under the updated tuning, Windows 11 keeps up to 2 GB more active data directly in memory instead of moving it to slower storage drives. That extra active retention helps the computer stay responsive as users open additional browser tabs. Since January, standard desktop interactions like opening the Start menu, File Explorer, and Settings have become up to 20 percent more responsive. Right-clicking and searching also benefit from that speed increase, which Microsoft achieved by directing the operating system to hold off on background tasks like search indexing while someone is working.

Individual applications have also been altered to cut their RAM consumption. Microsoft Edge now connects directly when it’s already active in the background, allowing the browser to launch up to 33 percent faster. On 8 GB machines, Microsoft Teams turns on Efficiency Mode by default, reducing resource loads dynamically and speeding up its launch time by up to 20 percent.

Desktop components and productivity programs use less memory as well. Widgets only load when someone actually opens them rather than running continuously in the background. Inactive Edge tabs now go to sleep after 15 minutes by default on 8 GB setups, down from the previous two-hour window. Microsoft said third-party developers can also take advantage of these efficiency tweaks, noting that WhatsApp is using less memory. Within the company’s own office suite, programs including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook now consume up to 360 megabytes less RAM.

Workload benchmarks and hardware tests

Microsoft claims the combined optimizations make 8 GB computers up to 40 percent faster when handling multitasking workflows. The company evaluated that claim by testing a system running 20 open tabs in Edge alongside a 4K video, the Outlook app, File Explorer, and large files in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel simultaneously. All of those applications remained open during the test.

Commissioned benchmark research released by Microsoft compared modern 2026 hardware with systems from 2021. In those tests, a 2026 Dell XPS 13 configured with 8 GB of RAM performed about as well as a 2021 Dell XPS 13 with 16 GB across selected workloads. The newer 8 GB laptop matched the older 16 GB model in general processor performance, web browsing, exporting 4K video, and select AI jobs. Microsoft noted that newer processors play a significant role, with the 2026 Dell XPS 13 offering over 90 percent faster multi-core performance than the 2021 model.

The company argued that the complete machine shapes the user experience rather than memory capacity alone. “For many people, 8 GB is a great fit for the things they do every day,” Microsoft executive vice president of Windows and devices Pavan Davuluri wrote in a post detailing the findings. He added that heavier workloads such as 3D modeling, advanced video editing, or large-scale data processing still benefit from 16 GB or more.

Rising component costs and device sales

The push to improve 8 GB hardware arrives as Microsoft promotes Copilot+ PCs, which require at least 16 GB of memory. Surging memory prices driven by demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure have made higher-capacity systems more costly, leading consumers and businesses to stretch upgrade cycles.

Financial figures show that hardware sales have struggled even while Microsoft generates strong profits overall. In the company’s fourth quarter for fiscal 2026 in late July, Windows OEM and devices revenue fell by 7 percent. In fiscal first-quarter 2027 results reported last week, Microsoft posted $36.4 billion in adjusted net income, an 18 percent rise from the prior year. Windows OEM and devices revenue dropped 22 percent during that same period.

Requirements and update availability

The memory management features are available in Windows 11 version 26H2, starting with build 26300.9818 or newer releases. Microsoft said users also need to keep their installed applications updated, as several of the efficiency gains arrive through standalone app updates and the Microsoft Store.
