Yahoo Answers was shut down on May 4, 2021, and its fifteen years of questions were deleted rather than archived. Yahoo's stated reason was that the service had become less popular over the years. That is true and it is not the whole story, because the same company still owned a Q&A service in another country that is running today.
What Yahoo Answers Actually Was
Yahoo Answers opened as a public beta on December 8, 2005, covered at the time by TechCrunch and Search Engine Watch, and left beta in May 2006. Anyone could ask anything, anyone could answer, and the community voted on which answer was best. There were points, badges and levels.
It grew enormously. In May 2010, Yahoo said Yahoo Answers had passed one billion answers, with more than 200 million users worldwide and around 350,000 new visitors a day, as reported by Search Engine Land. By 2012, Search Engine Land reported the site had reached 300 million questions, while also noting that question and answer activity was declining.
Those two reports, two years apart, are the entire arc. The peak and the visible decline were both documented while the site was still the internet's default place to ask a stupid question in public.
Why It Was Actually Funny, and Why That Mattered
Yahoo Answers is remembered as a joke, and that reputation is fair but it is also the reason it was valuable.
The site had no expertise filter and no reputation cost. People asked questions they would not put their name to anywhere else: medical worries, legal panic, relationship questions, and an enormous volume of things that are only embarrassing because nobody ever writes them down. The answers were frequently wrong. The questions were an unusually honest record of what ordinary people did not know, in their own words, before search engines started answering in complete sentences.
That record is the thing that was deleted. Not the wrong answers, which nobody misses. The questions.

The redirect is the detail that gets skipped and it is the one with lasting effects. Yahoo did not leave the pages up as a read-only archive at their original addresses. Every question URL, and there were hundreds of millions of them, was pointed at a homepage. That is why a fifteen-year-old forum post or search result that linked to a Yahoo Answers thread now takes you nowhere useful. The link is not broken in the way a 404 is broken. It resolves, to something unrelated.
The Timing, and What It Does Not Prove
One month after the shutdown was announced, and one day before it took effect, Verizon announced on May 3, 2021 that funds managed by affiliates of Apollo Global Management would acquire Verizon Media, the division containing Yahoo and AOL, for $5 billion, with Verizon retaining a 10 percent stake. Apollo's own press release and CNBC both carry the date and the terms.
It is tempting to draw a line between those two events, and the record does not support one. The shutdown was announced on April 5, four weeks before the sale was announced. What the sequence does show is the context: Yahoo Answers was closed by a corporate owner in the middle of preparing the business it sat inside for sale. Nobody has published a document connecting the two, and this article is not going to invent one.
This is the ordinary way platforms end, and it is the pattern collected in the platforms that shaped the internet and then vanished. The owner's plans change, and the product goes, whether or not anyone was still using it.
What Survives, and Who Saved It
Yahoo gave individual users a route to their own data until June 30, 2021. It did not publish a public archive.
The Archive Team did. The volunteer collective ran a crawl of Yahoo Answers through April and early May 2021, and the results sit on the Internet Archive as a series of dated collections, with the last of them captured in the days immediately before the shutdown. They are raw web archive files rather than a browsable Q&A site, which means the material exists but is not convenient, and no search engine indexes it the way the original was indexed.
That is the honest state of it. A substantial portion of Yahoo Answers was saved by people with no obligation to save it, in a format made for preservation rather than reading, and nobody can tell you what percentage of the original site it represents because Yahoo never published the size of what it deleted.

The Part Almost Nobody Mentions
A Yahoo Q&A service is still running, and it is older than Yahoo Answers was.
Yahoo! Chiebukuro launched in Japan in April 2004, twenty months before the US Yahoo Answers beta. It is still live in 2026, operated by LY Corporation, the Japanese company formed in 2023 from the merger of Z Holdings, Yahoo! Japan and LINE.
Yahoo Japan has always been a separate corporate entity from the US Yahoo business, which is why a decision made in California in 2021 did not touch it. The product idea did not fail. The company that shut Yahoo Answers shut its own version of a thing that, under different ownership, is still one of the largest Q&A sites in its market.
Why It Is Worth Caring About a Site People Laughed At
The internet does not automatically keep anything. Yahoo Answers was free to use, and the terms allowed exactly what happened. Nobody who asked a question there in 2007 was told that the record of it would depend on whether a volunteer group happened to run a crawl fourteen years later.
The questions people asked in public before they had anywhere better to ask are gone from the open web, and what is left is a set of archive files that a specialist can open. That is not a tragedy. It is just the default outcome, and it is worth knowing that it is the default.
