Springfield, Illinois, is where Iguodala was born. He is Linda Shanklin’s son. In Mattoon, Illinois, and Dayton, his older brother Frank participated in athletics for Lake Land College.[4] His father is Nigerian, while his mother is African American.

Iguodala says that Michael Jordan was the player he most admired as a child and that he supported the Chicago Bulls.

Iguodala graduated from Springfield, Illinois’ Lanphier High School, which also turned out athletes of note including basketball guard Kevin Gamble and baseball Hall of Famer Robin Roberts.

He excelled both academically and athletically at Lanphier, earning All-Conference academic accolades, being named to the National Honor Roll, being named numerous times as a State Journal-Register Student-Athlete of the Week, and earning three letters in track for the high jump.

Iguodala attracted the attention of coaches throughout the country in the summer of 2000 when he was voted the Most Valuable Player of the AAU National Tournament after making the game-winning basket at the last buzzer to give his team the 17-and-under National Championship.

He participated in the Washington, D.C., Jordan Brand Classic in 2002. Iguodala scored six points on 3-6 shooting and had five rebounds, two assists, three steals, and a block in 22 minutes of action. Iguodala participated in AAU basketball with Larry Butler’s Illinois Warriors, a group that also included Dwyane Wade, Quentin Richardson, and Jon Scheyer.
