Corky Lee, a Chinese-American activist, photographer, journalist, and community organizer, made it his life’s mission to fight against the injustices faced by Asian Americans. Born on September 5, 1947, in Queens, New York City, Lee was the second child of Lee Yin Chuck and Jung See Lee, both of whom had migrated to the United States from China. Lee’s parents owned a laundry and a seamstress business, and he had four siblings.
Despite not being able to afford his own camera, Lee taught himself photography and used it to document the daily lives of Asian Americans, capturing their diversity and nuances that were often ignored or overlooked by mainstream media. He drew inspiration from a photograph he saw in a social studies textbook that depicted only white laborers, despite the significant contributions of Chinese workers to the transcontinental railroad’s construction.
His photographs chronicled the Asian American community’s struggles, including the 1975 incident where NYPD officers beat a Chinese American man and the 1982 protests following the murder of Vincent Chin in Michigan.
